2020 Summer Internship

Two undergraduate students (Jung-Hyun Won and Minyeong Son) joined CCADD for the 2020 Summer Intership program, and they will spend the next 2 months experiencing the research environment while participating in the active research projects at CCADD.

Jung-Hyun Won is a fourth-year undergraduate student at Chung-Ang University, double majoring in Biotechnology (Animal Science and Technology) and Biomedical Engineering. Previously, Jung-Hyun worked as an intern at GSK Korea, a global pharmaceutical company, where she has developed a broad interest in pharmacology and drug development. During the internship program at CCADD, Jung-Hyun is looking forward to learning drug development processes as well as the basics of clinical pharmacology and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms applicable to the pharmaceutical area.

Minyeong Son is a third-year undergraduate student at Dongguk University, double majoring in Biomedical Engineering and Convergence Software. Minyeong is interested in AI technologies and their practical applications to drug development to make it more efficient and productive. Minyeong wants to learn how to analyze medical data using computer languages, such as Python and R, which could be accomplished by becoming an active member, though limited, of the various research teams at CCADD.

Jeong Ah Choi has joined CCADD!

Jeong Ah Choi is an administrative assistant to Prof. Howard Lee and accountant. Jeong Ah has joined CCADD in June, 2020, and is in charge of budgeting, expense tracking and filing for the research projects of CCADD. Jeong Ah is also responsible for general office tasks such as coordinating meetings and events and record keeping. Prior to joining CCADD, Jeong Ah has worked at the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, Ajou University, in the capacity of research budget administrator. Please welcome Jeong Ah!

CCADD leads an SNU AI forum for efficient development and optimal use of drugs

CCADD has successfully assembled an interdisciplinary research team at SNU, interested in the application of AI to the development and optimal use of drugs. Recently, the team has received a small, but important, intramural grant to coordinate a series of forums to stimulate, develop, and nurture new, innovative research ideas in the field, entitled “Artificial intelligence for drug development and its optimal use (PI: Prof. Howard Lee)”. Prof. Young Kee Shin, Prof. Eugene C. Yi, Prof. Park Young Joo (from MMBS), Prof. Bongki Moon (from the Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering), Prof. Jung Mi Oh (from the College of Pharmacy), Prof. Jinwook Choi (from the Interdisciplinary Program in Bioengineering), and graduate students in the research teams will meet regularly starting early June 2020 through mid August.

The intramural grant of 3 million Korean won or $2,500 was awarded by the SNU AI Committee. Through the forum, recent progresses in applying AI and machine learning techniques to drug development and its optimal use will be reviewed. Furthermore, the forum will actively seek novel research topics in the fields, which CCADD hopes to end up leading to new grant applications.

Chae Jeong Lee

Chae Joeng Lee was a student researcher at the Center for Convergence Approaches in Drug Development (CCADD), Graduate School of Convergence Science and Technology, Seoul National University. Since she joined the Smart Internship Program at CCADD early 2020, Chae Jeong participated in a Small Grant Exploratory Research (SGER) grant project, supported by the National Research Foundation. Chae Jeong was also a full-time student at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies with a major in biomedical engineering and a minor in computer engineering. Using her coding and programming skills, Chae Jeong aimed to identify the common sensitive eligibility features that could increase the efficiency of clinical trial feasibility.

SUCCESS kicks off 2020

On January 21, CCADD, Selvas AI Inc, and collaborating investigators held a 2020 kick-off meeting for the SUCCESS project at Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH). Through this kick-off meeting, the participants reviewed the outcomes of the first year and discussed the logistics and strategies to enable a smoother communication and collaboration for the project second year.

In this meeting, the project members newly set the goal of the SUCCESS project to predict the effectiveness of new drugs that have not yet been approved using limited clinical and non-clinical data through CDM-d simulations. The participants agreed that developing new measures of drug similarity would be crucial to the project such that they could leverage low-level data, such as structural information and in-vivo testing results to adequately predict clinical performance of a drug. Also, CCADD and Selvas AI agreed to hold a workshop where outside experts from diverse fields of medicines and bioinformatics shared their opinions about a novel approach to measure a drug similarity. Furthermore, Prof. In-Young Choi pointed out the importance of having a standard study protocol for a smoother and faster approval by the Institutional Review Board. The project members also agreed to hold a meeting regularly on a monthly basis.

Sung Jong Kim, BS

Sung Jong Kim was a student researcher at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Biopharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Convergence Science and Technology, Seoul National University. Sung Jong received his BS degree in molecular biotechnology and English-Korean interpretation and translation studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (2016-2020).

Jinyeong Yang

Jinyeong Yang was a student researcher at the Center for Convergent Approaches in Drug Development, Graduate School of Convergence Science and Technology, Seoul National University. Jinyeong is also a third-year undergraduate student at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Seoul National University, where she studies animal biotechnology. Jinyeong joined CCADD through the 2020 Winter Internship program and participated in a research project, supported by the National Research Foundation. In this project, Jinyeong identified the common sensitive eligibility features for clinical trials using machine learning techniques, which would help recruiting eligible patients more efficiently.

2020 Winter Smart Internship has completed!

Six undergraduate students (Sung Jong Kim, Hwe Won Kim, Jinyeong Yang, Song Yeon Oh, Chae Jeong Lee, and Yura Hwang) have successfully completed the 8 week-long '2020 Winter Smart Internship' with no dropout or leftover. The students have not only learned how to do data science by reviewing two textbooks “R for Data science” and “GGPlot 2, Essential R”, but also participated in several ongoing CCADD research projects awarded by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Korea Health Industry Development Institute, and Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. The internship program was an opportunity to garner insights as to how machine learning and data science could address some challenges drug development has long suffered from. Although the internship program was over, four students (Sung Jong Kim, Yura Hwang, Jinyeong Yang, and Chae Jeong Lee) have decided to continue participating in the CCADD projects and lab activities. On the other hand, Song Yeon Oh and Hwe Won Kim are exploring other opportunities. Prof. Howard Lee congratulated the students for their achievements, saying “This year’s winter internship program was quite unique in that CCADD has never had this many students before while four of them would continue involving in the research activities.”
