The 2022 Summer Internship Program at CCADD Has Begun!

The 2022 Summer Internship Program at CCADD began on July 4th, 2022. This summer, the internship opportunity went to four applicants (Juhyun Baek, Yeon-su Choi, Sung-Joon Park, and Yujin Kim). The internship program is planned for productive eight weeks.

Juhyun Baek is a 4th year medical biotechnology major at Konkuk University. After graduating from the nursing program at Gachon University in 2017, she worked in the gynecology ward at Korea University Guro Hospital and the gynecology outpatient department at Samsung Medical Center for three years. Following her work experience as a nurse, Juhyun pursued her interest in biotechnology by transferring to Konkuk University in 2021. She applied for the 2022 CCADD Summer Internship Program to gain hands-on experience in drug development studies using real world data and learn deeply about the pharmaceutical industry and the clinical trials.

Yeon-su has earned a degree in nursing science from Sungshin Women’s University. For 2 years, Yeon-su has worked as a clinical research coordinator at the hematology department at Seoul National University Hospital. While working, Yeon-su developed an interest in the development processes for clinical trials. Prior to joining this internship, she set a goal for herself to study various design features of clinical trials, and she considers this opportunity as a stepping stone before she begins her Master's degree in this field.

Sung Joon is a junior in material science and engineering at Seoul National University. His interest in biomaterials led to the summer internship program at CCADD. Although his interest did not perfectly align with the research area of CCADD, he decided to take a chance and let himself explore into an unfamiliar frontier. He is thus firm in his resolution to take advantage of this opportunity to learn various research fields, even though they lie outside his major. Through the internship, he wants to get much basic information about the drug development process and the amalgamation of artificial intelligence (Al) technologies into the process.

Yujin is studying bio-medical engineering at Chung-Ang University. Her passion for studying the drug development process motivated her to apply for the CCADD summer internship program. She is especially interested in applying the AI technology to drug development. This intellectual curiosity of hers deepened further as she read through related research papers independently. And now that she’s here, she plans to partake in various on-going research projects at CCADD and to learn deeply about improving the efficiency of the biopharmaceutical development process through state-of-the-art AI technologies.

We cheer them all on, and we sincerely hope that, at the close of internship, they get what they were looking for.

“Strategies for New Drug Development in Korea” Published

“Strategies for New Drug Development in Korea”, coauthored by Yoona Choi, Prof. Howard Lee, Jung-Hyun Won, and Yesol Hong, was published on May 16, 2022. In this book, the authors analyzed the current status of new drug development in Korea from three perspectives, each starting with the letter E, i.e., exploration (from discovery to preclinical development), exploitation (clinical development and regulatory approval), and expedition (fast access to new drugs by patients). In this approach, the authors have tried to identify the key areas to improve, and suggested strategies to accelerate new drug development in Korea through a business ecosystem window.

This book aimed to answer following three questions.

The first question the book tries to answer was “Unlike semiconductor, smartphone, and K-Pop, why have Korean new drug development endeavors not worked at its full potential in the global market?” After briefly explaining the processes of new drug development, the book discusses how and why important new drug development is, followed by an in-depth discussion as to what went wrong or derailed in Korea before and why in Korea. The book also summarizes capabilities and resources for each process of new drug development and where Korea is lacking behind.

The second question to answer through the book was “How can Korea improve and accelerate patient access to innovative new drugs?” The book shows how delayed drug approval and reimbursement have been in Korea by comparing the drug approval systems in Korea with those in several developed countries, and by focusing on the inefficiency of the current drug pricing and reimbursement systems in Korea. The authors have proposed several new policies to ‘expedite’ patient access to new drugs in Korea.

Lastly, the book asks “How can Korea write success stories in drug development?” For this question, the book summarizes first the current status ‘as-is’ and proposes a future as ‘to-be’ from the business ecosystem perspective. The book then discusses how those ‘to-be’s can be accomplished.
